Bronson-Chaplin family papers, 1804-1926.

Consists of manuscripts, poems, prose, research notes, speeches and addresses, correspondence, clippings, and a travel diary (1817) dating from 1804 to 1926 and n.d., that document the research, writing, and teaching of Walter C. Bronson and the Jeremiah Chaplin family. Most of the collection consists of the papers of Walter C. Bronson and extensive research notes for his History of Brown University 1764-1914 comprise about one-half of the collection. Notes on English literature and authors comprise about one-fourth of the collection. Some of the authors represented in the notes are: Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lawrence Sterne, Tobias George Smollett, Baron Alfred Tenneyson Tenneyson, William Makepeace Thackeray, William Wordsworth, Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Henry Fielding. One prose item, The Cow That Wanted To Write Poetry, appears to have been written in 1893 for a child. Another prose item is titled, Environments of a Country Pedagogue-Spunky Hollow. There are also a few poems written by Bronson and notes and texts for addresses given by him at Brown University and other organizations. The Chaplin family papers consists primarily of correspondence between members of the Chaplin family, including Jeremiah Chaplin; his wife Marcia S. (O'Brien) Chaplin; and some of their children, A. Judson Chaplin, John O'B. Chaplin, and Anne Hasseltine Chaplin. The letters primarily discuss family matters and Christianity. Anne Hasseltine Chaplin married Benjamin Franklin Bronson and Walter Cochrane Bronson was their son. There is a type of circular letter (travel diary) dated from Nov. 1817 to Apr. 1818 and written by a missionary on a voyage to Burma. The letter is addressed to several women, probably including Mrs. Chaplin. The twenty-one year old writer describes the voyage, the conversion of sailors, his or her feelings about work as a missionary, aspects of Christianity, and a Christian life. Adoniram Judson was in charge of the Burmese mission, and is referred to in the missionary's letter.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war." This collection is partly a result of that effort. From the guide to t...
